Domaine Jean-Claude Marsanne
Saint-Joseph, Rhône Valley
The Marsanne family has been cultivating vines in Mauves, one of the historical cradles of Saint-Joseph, for several generations. After the premature passing of his father in 1950, Jean Marsanne took over the estate at a young age and gradually developed the vineyard. In 1970, he decided to vinify and bottle his first wines himself, at a time when the estate only covered three hectares. His son Jean-Claude Marsanne took over the property in 1991 and continued its development. The estate now represents approximately 9.6 hectares, including 6.5 hectares of Saint-Joseph red, 0.8 hectare of Saint-Joseph white, and 0.8 hectare of Crozes-Hermitage, along with plots of syrah and viognier in IGP Ardèche.
The majority of the Saint-Joseph vines are located around Mauves, on the granitic hills overlooking the Rhône. Syrah is naturally at the centre of production, while marsanne constitutes the bulk of the Saint-Joseph white. The estate remains deeply family-oriented and committed to a classic style of northern Rhône, favouring measured extractions and ageing that preserve the fruit and the identity of the terroirs.
